#11 - 🚫 BUSTING the VFX Myth! 🚫
Hey there,
I’m about to bust a big myth in the video game industry that’s been holding aspiring VFX artists back for too long:
You DON’T need a degree to break into VFX.
Yup, you read that right. You do NOT need a degree to land a job as a VFX artist. In many cases, a degree can even hurt you more than help you. What you DO need is a killer portfolio!
Let’s explore why a degree isn’t the golden ticket everyone thinks it is and how you can get noticed by top game studios.
📚 The College Myth: Degrees vs. Skills
Fun fact: the average cost of a 4-year, out-of-state university in the USA is about $50,000 per year. That’s $200,000 or more for a degree!!
And for that price, what do you get? A piece of paper. That’s it.
How many students graduate with a degree but still struggle to land a job in their field? Many art school graduates have portfolios that look impressive to other students or teachers - but fall short in real studios.
Many schools push expensive, irrelevant degrees while their instructors haven’t set foot in a studio in years. Some even tout “industry connections,” but when you dig deeper, you find:
The teachers haven’t worked in the industry for years.
Their skills & advice are often outdated.
The graduation portfolio doesn’t align with real-world needs.
They count jobs like McDonalds as “success rates” for employment.
They spend more money on ads & bribing review sites than improving their programs.
By the time you realize you’ve been sold a dream that doesn’t translate to job offers - it’s too late - you’ve already invested your time and money.
💪 What You REALLY Need to Break into VFX
A KILLER portfolio. Period.
Game studios want:
A demo reel that shows your best skills.
A demo reel tailored to the game they’re making.
In other words, create a portfolio that speaks directly to the studio you’re applying to. Don’t just throw random projects together. Show that you understand their game, art style & technical needs.
❌ When Might You Need a Degree?
Most studios don’t care about your degree, but there are exceptions:
Visa Requirements: If you’re working in another country, a degree may be necessary for a visa, but if you’re skilled, you can explore alternatives like an O-1 visa.
Teaching Careers: If you plan to become a university professor, a degree may be required. But let's be real - you're an artist, not a professor - YET! 😉
🏆 Your next step?
Ask yourself:
What can I create today to show studios I’m ready to contribute?
How can I tailor my portfolio to the style and needs of the studio?
Am I ready to invest in my future by learning & building rather than relying on an overpriced degree?
The power is in YOUR hands. Start working on your portfolio today! I’m here to guide you every step of the way. ✨
